Syphilis
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection which if diagnosed in its early stages can be successfully treated with antibiotics.

Cause of Syphilis
Syphilis is caused by the Treponema pallidum bacteria which is transmitted from one person to another through direct contact with a syphilis lesion during anal, oral and vaginal sexual intercourse.

Symptoms of Syphilis
There are four different stages of the disease, each one having different symptoms depending how long the person has been infected for, symptoms can include:

Prevention Of Syphilis
Prevention is best achieved through practicing safe sex.

Diagnosing Syphilis
Diagnosis is achieved through blood testing or analysis of one of the syphilis sores.

Treatment of Syphilis
Treatment involves the use of antibiotics and if caught early will be successful. In later stages treatment will prevent any further complications from arising but cannot reverse any of the damage already done by the disease. Without treatment the disease can prove fatal.

Most At Risk
Pregnant women infected with syphilis are at risk of having a still birth or causing the baby to be born with serious complications that may prove fatal.
