Dysentery (Shigella Dysenteriae et al)
Dysentery is an disorder the intestines caused by a parasite or more commonly bacterial infection. In severe cases dysentery can be fatal if left untreated.

Symptoms of Dysentery
The symptoms of dysentery often appear within a few hours of infection, and can include any or all of the following:

Areas Infected by Dysentery
Overcrowded areas and places with poor hygiene and sanitation are high risk areas.

Cause of Dysentery
Dysentery can be caused by the Shigella bacteria or by the amoeba Entamoeba histolytica.

Testing For Dysentery
As well as observing the symptoms a stool sample will also be taken in order to confirm the presence of either the bacteria or parasite.

Preventing Dysentery
Dysentery can be avoided with careful hygiene and adequate sanitation,

Treatment for Dysentery
Consultation with your doctor is essential if you suspect dysentery. Mild cases tend to pass within a few days with no complications and simply require plenty of fluid and rest, however in more serious cases antibiotics and pain killers may also be required. In the case of amoebic dysentery, treatment to remove the worms may also be necessary.
