San Juan Festival
This colourful festival is in honour of John the Baptist who is patron saint of the Amazon rivers and tributary's. The festival is widely celebrated especially within the Madre de Dios Region.

The festival includes several events such as live music and traditional dancing, competitions, craft and food fairs that offer plenty of local cuisine in particular Juanes which are named after the saint and contain amongst other ingredients rice and chicken and tacacho's which are cooked bananas, there are also no shortage of beverages.

The riverbanks are often filled with families who relax on the edge of the river during the day and take the opportunity to bath in the rivers which are said to be blessed by Saint John at this time.

During the evening the entertainment is within the towns where live music, dancing and disco's offer further festive enjoyment.

Iquitos, Tarapoto and Puerto Maldonado are some of the most popular places to visit for the festival.
