Christmas Day (Navidad)
Christmas celebrations in Madrid are a very traditional affair with nativity scenes and the chance for friends and family to get together and enjoy a traditional meal.

Christmas is not as commercialized as it is in other parts of the world and you'll find that many gifts are exchanged on Three Kings Day in January rather than on Christmas Day, however there are some madrilenos who exchange gifts on both Christmas Day and Three Kings Day.

The streets of Madrid are beautifully lit up providing a superb visual accompaniment when shopping for gifts and the Christmas market in Plaza Mayor is also a very colourful affair with the whole square seemingly lit up and packed with stalls offering no end of gift ideas as well as decorations and many beautiful figurines for the all important nativity scenes.

Cuisine plays a big part in Christmas festivities with popular foods often including the sweet bread loaf paneton, a nougat known as turron and the roscon de reyes which is a ring shaped cake. Main meals often feature plenty of seafood with lobster, king prawns and crab as well as other more traditional foods such as turkey, ham and lamb which is also eaten especially on Christmas Eve.

Date Of Christmas
Christmas Day takes place annually on the 25th of December.

Christmas is celebrated throughout Madrid.
