Christmas (Navidad) • Spain
There are plenty of Christmas events taking place throughout Spain at Christmas which is traditionally the chance for families to spend time together.

Celebrations often start getting underway on or after the Feast of the Immaculate Conception at the beginning of December which is when many of the nativity scenes are put on display within plazas across the country. Some of these nativity scenes are really quite impressive containing plenty of detailed figurines depicting the nativity of Jesus Christ.

Christmas markets such as the popular Fira de Santa Llucia in Barcelona and the Feria del Belen in Seville offer a wide range of gift ideas and decorations including all the necessary items required for a nativity scene, such as figurines. Seville is also the location of the traditional Dance Of The Sixes or the Los Seises dance which is performed at the Cathedral on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

The streets are beautifully lit up over Christmas making shopping, especially within cities a very colourful occasion that adds to the atmosphere of the popular shopping areas and plazas.

Christmas Day is often the chance for families to get together for a traditional meal and for small gifts to be exchanged, although the majority of presents are often given after the Three Kings Parade on the 6th of January for the Epiphany.

Popular foods eaten over Christmas include roast lamb and turkey, dry cured ham, seafood, nougat known as turron, nuts, dates, marzipan, polvorone which is a crumbly shortbread, mandarins and the sweetbread known as roscon de reyes which is traditionally eaten on Three Kings Day and on the Epiphany.
