Barcelona Marathon
The popular Barcelona marathon covers a classic distance of 26.218 miles and takes participants through many areas of the city and past many of its well known landmarks.

The marathon first began in 1978 and today continues to attracts participants from all around the globe including athletes from Kenya, Ethiopia, Brazil, Great Britain and the USA.

The race often starts at the Placa Espanya which contains an impressive fountain decorated with many statues in its centre and connects to several of Barcelona's main streets in the area. Also around the square are the Arenas de Barcelona shopping mall and the Venetian Towers which lead towards the Museu d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC).

The route takes participants past many of the city's well known architectural buildings such as the Sagrada Familia and the Casa Mila as well as other landmarks such as the Arc de Triomf.

Also taking place during the week of the marathon is the Expo Sports exposition which has well over 150 stands of sports equipment specialising in triathlon, trail and running equipment with plenty of new products on the market from both well known and up and coming brands.

Date Of Marathon
The marathon often takes place annually during the middle of March.

The marathon covers several areas of the city with each years route open to change from the previous years, in the past the marathon has often started around the Placa Espanya at the base of Montjuic hill within the Sants-Montjuic neighbourhood of the city, with the Expo Sports situated close to the Magic Fountain.

Travel Guide
The Placa Espanya can be reached by train (R5, R6, R50 and R60) by Subway (L1, L3, L8, S4, S8 and S33) and by bus (9, 23, 27, 50, H12, A1, A2, N1, N2, N13, N14, N15, N16 and N17).
