Prague Spring Festival
The Spring Festival in Prague is a long standing international music festival that has been running for over 60 years and draws in talented musicians and artists from around the world who perform a wide variety of musical compositions.

The festival is traditionally opened on the 12th of May with Bedrich Smetana's symphonic cycle "my country" marking the anniversary of the popular Czech composers death and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony is often chosen for closing the festival on June 4th.

The Spring Festival also holds the prestigious Prague Spring International Music Competition which has awards for Piano, Organ, Violin, Cello, Trumpet, French Horn, Oboe, Singing and Conducting.

Past winners have included the Russian cellist Natalia Gutman, the virtuoso flutist Sir James Galway and pianist Jan Panenka.

The prize giving in the past has taken place at the Old Town Hall by the Mayor who is patron of the competition with winners receiving prize money and often the chance to perform at many other International festivals and events.

The festival starts on the 12th of May which is the anniversary of the death of Bedrich Smetana and runs until June 4th.

Performances take place at several locations throughout Prague such as the Rudolfinum and Municipal House.
