Mehrangarh Fort which means Sun Fort is steeped in history and stands in a commanding position on a rocky cliff overlooking the city of Jodhpur.

The Fort began construction in 1459 by Rao Jodha and has excellent defenses in place with its tall surrounding walls which are 6 meters thick in places and cannons positioned at the very top, along with seven gates through which to pass before you reach the main entrance gate to the Fort, it was very well protected.

There are several areas of interest within the complex such as several galleries, containing not only some very well preserved paintings but also a unique gallery of turbans.

The various period rooms are filled with excellent interior decorations and have ornately decorated walls and ceilings with splendid paintings also on display. There is also an armory which contains an interesting collection of weapons and artefacts used throughout the ages.
