Table Top Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa
Table Top Mountain is Cape Towns most prominent landmark and is one of its top tourist attractions. The mountain forms part of the Table Mountain National Park and is unique due to its very level plateau from which it derives its name. Once on the plateau you will enjoy fantastic views of Cape Town City, Table Bay, Lions Head, Robben Island and Signal Hill. There is also a souvenir shop and restaurant when you reach the top.

On the eastern side of the plateau is a stone built cairn which was used for trigonometric survey and built by Sir Thomas Maclear in 1844 and to the west is the cable car station.

Table Top Mountain forms part of the Cape Floral Region which is a protected World Heritage Site. The Mountain range contains several species of plants and animals; the most common animal to be seen on the mountain are the dassie or rock rabbit which looks a bit like a guinea pig with short ears and a tail. Other animals and reptiles that are often seen are porcupines, snakes, tortoises and mongooses.

There are also many trails that you can go on to reach the top of Table Top Mountain which depending upon your hiking ability will offer either a steady gradual climb or a steeper more demanding trail. The weather can be very changeable at times so ensure that you pack appropriate safety gear.

Table Top Mountain Rock Climbing
Traditional climbing is permitted and the main climbs are situated below the upper cable station.

Always hike in company preferably in a small group, ensure that you take a mobile phone with you in case of emergency and warm clothing as even in the summer it can be considerably colder when you reach the top and the weather can come over very quickly. There are trained staff who patrol the park and trained climbers who can be called upon in case of emergency.
